Limited Editions

‘New York Times’

Limited Edition on canvas (150)

size:  16″ x 16″

This piece was inspired by a visit to  the iconic Times Square in New York, the penguins appear to have wandered in to Times Square, perhaps lost and looking to get back to Central Park Zoo or maybe looking to catch a show on Broadway!

Roman Holiday’

Limited Edition on canvas (150)

size:  16″ x 16″

This piece took inspiration from a visit to Rome and a film poster I came across for the classic 1950s film; ‘Roman Holiday’ starring Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck.

The most famous scene from this film featured the two co-stars riding a scooter in front of the Coliseum in Rome which was the basis of the film poster and the painting

Le Grand Tour’

Limited Edition on canvas (150)

size:  16″ x 16″

This piece was inspired by a vintage (1940s-50s) magazine picture I came across of a glamorous female model with a luxury car in the ‘Place du Trocadero’ in Paris which overlooks the Eiffel Tower.

I visited the same spot a couple of years ago and 70 years on it looked exactly the same and it’s now one of the most instagrammable places in Paris. So where better for a couple of penguin explorers to be pictured and of course with the iconic French car; Citroen 2CV.

‘Concrete Jungle’

Limited Edition on canvas (95), size:  30″ x 30″

This piece took inspiration from one of my favourite cities ‘New York’ and one my favourite music artists and famous New Yorker; JAY-Z. The title of the painting coming from an inspirational line in the chorus of his song about New York; “Empire State of Mind”; “New York, Concrete jungle where dreams are made of”.

The Jaguar in the painting representing JAY-Z, climbing up a lamppost, signifying JAY-Z’s ascent from the streets of the tough Brooklyn streets to the top of the music world and living the high life around the extremely affluent streets of Midtown Manhattan.

There is also a hint towards the impacts of deforestation on the habitat of wild animals such as the Jaguar and what the future now holds for these magnificent animals.

Going Underground’

Limited Edition on canvas (95), size:  30″ x 30″

Growing up in the 80s, Paul Weller with his time in ‘The Jam’ especially was a big influence on me and British culture as a whole and he’s continued to be influential ever since. He was therefore the inspiration for this painting with arguably his and The Jam’s most famous and iconic song ‘Going Underground’ being the focal point and title for the piece.

Paul Weller is often referred to as the ‘Modfather’ and the key colours of the famous ‘Mod’ circular symbol (red, white and blue) are throughout the piece. He is also someone known for being forthright with his views and definitely not one to take fools gladly, therefore the use of the Tiger to symbolise Paul Weller is quite apt.

‘California Dreaming’

Limited Edition on canvas board (150)

size:  20″ x 20″

This painting was inspired by the famous David Hockney painting ‘The bigger splash’. As in hockney’s painting I’ve utilised another 50s modernist house ‘the stahl house’ overlooking LA.

Although unlike Hockney’s painting in this piece you can see the cause of splash, the polar bear cooling off in the pool overlooking LA, with a hint toward the impact of climate change on these magnificent animals.

Licensed to chill’

Limited Edition on canvas (150)

size:  20″ x 20″

Inspired by ‘Casino Royale’, the first James Bond film starring Daniel Craig.

The rockhopper penguin has interrupted/joined a high stakes poker game, naturally suited to the black tie dress code with an appropriate Martini shaken not stirred and the infamous James bond PPK pistol.

‘Born to be Wild’

Limited Edition on canvas (150)

size:  20″ x 20″

Inspiration for this piece came from seeing a famous photograph of the iconic actor Marlon Brando, taken for the Movie poster of the 1953 film ‘The Wild One’, in the photograph he’s leaning over the front of a motorcycle and is coolness personified.

I’ve re-enacted this pose in this piece using a classic Harley Davidson (Road King) motorcycle with it’s chrome glinting in the sunshine and featuring in my opinion the coolest of all animals a Giant Panda, leaning on the handle bars in a similar fashion, contemplating a road trip across the iconic route 66 through Monument Valley.
